NCAA Selection Sunday – March Madness 2010 brackets chosen

College basketball fans, let the madness begin! On Sunday March 14, 2010, the NCAA selection committee chose its field of 64 teams for the 2010 NCAA Tournament (printable brackets here). Many teams were on the edge of their seats awaiting the announcement of just who would be in the “Big Dance”. Now that the conference tournaments and championships have been decided it was up to the committee to determine who will play in this year’s field for the NCAA title.

Earning the top seeds for 2010 are Kansas in the Midwest Region, Duke in the West Region, Syracuse in the South region and Kentucky in the East. Ironically Kentucky will play in the Syracuse region, while Syracuse will be in Houston. Kansas’ bracket will be in the Oklahoma City region, while Duke is in Salt Lake City. Each of these teams opens with their first opponent a #16 seed, which are usually an easy opening for the top teams.

Other top seeds in the Midwest are Ohio State at #2, Villanova at #3 and New Mexico with the #4. Kansas will need to keep an eye out for these and several other potential upset teams along the way if they want to make the Final 4.

For the West region, Duke’s other top seeded potential opponents could be #2 West Virginia, #3 Wisconsin and #4 Tennessee. Syracuse will have #2 Kansas State, #3 Pitt and #4 Purdue. Meanwhile in the East, Kentucky has to contend with #2 Georgetown, #3 Baylor, and #4 Temple.

According to ESPN’s bracketology, Virgina Tech, Mississippi State and Florida were among the first three teams out of the selection while Minnesota, Utah State and Illinois made it in from “the bubble”.
